Unity is what holds a design together and prevents the feeling of
disorder. Loose visual communication prevents the eyes from finding
a center of interest. This causes them to bounce around with
no place to land. Unity and simplicity are key aids to effective visual
communication. Here are a few suggestions:
-
Use a LIMITED palette.
- Stick
to a few type styles.
- Keep the number of shapes and sizes of art and types to a minimum.
- Place art and heads where they won't interfere with the natural
flow of reading matter.
- Have one element in an illustration or one illustration in a group
of illustrations dominate. Create a center of interest.
Obvious
ways to create unity is through enclosing everything in a border,
using the same basic shape, tone, color or mood throughout, and isolating the layout with white space.
"______________ space" can refer to the areas left
empty surrounding or within an image. It also refers the
amount of space between characters or between lines and blocks of
type.
