:: Project Two -

Choose one or both of the following options.

[1] Design a Poster

The Assignment:
Create a poster for the 2008 Medford Multicultural Fair

Poster Design Parameters and Considerations:

  • The poster will be in color
  • If possible, the theme (or a distinct variation) of a pear with the continents of the world on it should be utilized
  • The poster design should utilize the existing type font (to be supplied)
  • The poster design should be distinct enough to be recognized at a distance or while someone is walking by
  • The poster design should be able to work as a large poster (17 x 12), small poster (8 ½ x 11), table tent cards, street banner, and as design elements (which can be broken apart and re-combined) on tee-shirts and coffee mugs
  • Despite the apparent design limitations being set forth, if you come up with great design that works in a skinny horizontal or vertical strip, that’s okay, too.
  • Use the 2007 poster for reference copy for sponsors, dates, location, etc.
  • The poster design should make the event look upscale, established, and desirable as opposed to looking like a neighborhood yard sale
  • The poster design should be attractive enough to make people want to collect it and hang it on the wall as fine art
  • The poster design should be attractive enough to make merchants want to put it up in their retail location
  • Press kit package

Some Thoughts:

  • The 2007 poster used a pear to acknowledge Medford’s identity as the pear capitol of the galaxy while incorporating the continents to suggest an international multicultural theme.
  • The top 5,000 poster designs (deemed design-worthy by Professor) will be on display at the fair.
  • One of the most distinctive elements of the fair is the different and captivating music from around the world.  If musical design elements or motifs can be worked into the design, so much the better.  But…remember there will also be food and crafts from around the world.  (E.g. One might want to show flat bread from around the world: Greek pita, Indian Nain, Mexican tortilla, Chinese mu shoo pancakes, etc.)
  • A series of silhouettes of prominent architectural monuments from around the world: Big Ben or Tower Bridge in England; the Duomo in Florence, Italy; the pyramids in Egypt; a torii gate from Japan; the Eiffel Tower in Paris; and Blackbird in Medford.  (Note: As this design strays somewhat from the pear motif, it probably would not be a good avenue to explore.  It is only included here because it is late at night and I need to amuse myself.)
  • A Rorschach inkblot test tied into the pear orchard smudge pots.

Getting started.

Keep in mind that we will create the "look and feel" of the website which does not require any special technical knowledge!!! In fact, I encourage everyone to stay off of the computer until you have drawn out your thumbnail sketches.
