CS125di Digital Imaging Photoshop

Create a CD cover or book jacket.

Use Photoshop to create a CD cover or book jacket for a real or fictitious product. Be sure to showcase the knowledge you've picked up from chapters 1 through 8.

One of the strengths of the Photoshop program is its ability to merge and edit color images and create collages from scanned photos and/or original artworks.  Your project should feature an original image based upon a composite of at least three separate art elements.

While creating this project, keep the following guidelines in mind:

  1. Create the front and back cover (spine and inserts are optional)
  2. Print dimensions should be actual size of finished piece
  3. Resolution 300
  4. Use no more than 2 or 3 typefaces
  5. Use original photographs, drawings, or paintings
  6. Achieve a unified effect via color choices, scale, and/or  textural effect.  In other words, convince the viewer that these elements “go together” visually.
  7. Look at many examples of how other designers have approached book design.  Visit the virtual and analog bookstores and music stores.  Bring in some examples that you like.
  8. Experiment.  Practice your skills while exploring some of the possibilities of image editing.

Presentation:

Mount your project on matte board or place it inside of a jewel case. Be ready for critique at the start of class on November 4.

Grading will be based upon level of completion, creative effort, presentation, and technical proficiency. Late assignments will automatically lose 50% of the total possible points.
